Serving the Triune God in Mission
By Fr. Pedro Saveia, SVD
Fr. Pedro Saveia, SVD, was ordained a Divine Word Missionary priest in May 2026. He wrote this reflection during his time as a deacon.
Being a missionary has profoundly shaped my life and ministry. From the moment I felt God’s call, I realized that mission is not just an activity; it is a way of life. It is a response to the love of the Triune God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) who sends us forth to serve and proclaim His Word.
As a deacon, I have the privilege of assisting in catechesis on Saturdays at Saint Rita of Cascia Parish in Chicago. Often, I serve as a substitute catechist, learning the theme and classroom assignment only minutes before the session begins. While this can be challenging, it serves as a constant reminder that a missionary is always called to be ready. This responsibility has encouraged me to dedicate more time to studying the teachings of the Church, particularly the Catechism and other ecclesial documents, so that I may better serve the parish community.
Accompanying children, youth, and adults in catechesis has been a transformative experience. I have discovered that teaching the faith is also an opportunity to learn. I have learned to listen attentively, be patient, and witness with my life what I proclaim with my words. Each gathering becomes a sacred moment to sow the Word of God and to see hearts gradually open to Christ’s presence.
Serving as a deacon has deepened my understanding of Christian service. To reflect Christ the Servant means standing beside those in need, offering help without seeking recognition, and blessing what leads people closer to God. Every baptism I celebrate reminds me of my own baptism, the first call I received to serve God as prophet, king, and priest. In welcoming each new child into the Church, I rejoice that another brother or sister is joined to the Body of Christ, called to live in communion and to love without limits.
Preparing and delivering homilies is a deeply personal encounter with the Word of God for me. Before preaching, I am invited to let the Word transform my heart. Sometimes, I have the privilege of preaching within the Latino community at Saint Rita, where many people carry heavy burdens of uncertainty and fear, particularly regarding immigration challenges. While I may not be able to solve every difficulty, I can listen to them with compassion, pray with them, and remind them that God walks with His people through every trial. Even in moments of helplessness, faith assures us that our prayers are heard.
Reflecting on my journey, I recognize that mission, the diaconate, and catechetical service have continually shaped my heart. They remind me that we are all sent to witness the love of the Triune God, who accompanies, sustains, and sends us forth. Every word we speak, every act of service, and every blessing we share becomes an opportunity to live our faith with gratitude, joy, and dedication.
